“In 1977, sex was safe, pleasure was a business, and business was booming” with this tagline, “Boogie Nights” an American drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, debuted on the big screens in 1997. The story is set in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley and focuses on a young nightclub kitchen porter who becomes a popular star of pornographic films, chronicling his rise in the “Golden Age of Porn” of the 1970s through to his fall during the excesses of the 1980s. 

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Heather Graham, the movie was released on 10 October, 1997, garnering critical praise. It was also nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Anderson, Best Supporting Actress for Moore and Best Supporting Actor for Reynolds. The film’s soundtrack has also received acclaim and became one of the most emblematic movie soundtracks over the last three decades.

Plot

In San Fernando Valley, in 1977, Eddie Adams is a good looking and plenty of libidos to spare man, young kitchen porter who works in a nightclub and he is discovered by porn director Jack Horner, because of his “huge talent” and he turns Eddie into Dirk Diggler, the star of adult films. Supported by a circle of friends, including fellow actors Amber Waves, Rollergirl and Reed Rothchild, Dirk fulfils all his ambitions, but a toxic combination of drugs and selfishness threatens to bring him to ruin.

Movie Soundtrack 

The soundtrack is a time travel back to the 70s, known as ” Disco Era”. Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States’ urban nightlife scene. 

The track presents the best of that period, through classic songs and renowned artists. Two Boogie Nights soundtracks were released, the first at the time of the film’s initial release and the second the following year.

The music captures the feeling of the era, as it runs through disco (“Best of My Love,” “Jungle Fever”), folk-pop (“Brand New Key”), funk (“Spill the Wine,” “Got to Give It Up, Pt. 1,” “Machine Gun”), soft rock (“Magnet & Steel”), AOR (“Livin’ Thing”), oldies (“God Only Knows”), and heavy metal power ballads (“Sister Christian”).
