Welcome to the TV Nostalgia section!

I’ve decided to start talking about the great and classic TV show “I dream of Jeannie”, an American fantasy sitcom series, produced from 1965 to 1970. That was the first sitcom series I’ve seen (Are you wondering if I was born in the 60’s or the 70’s? Ok, I am getting old, but I am not that old). I used to watch it in the 80’s on TV, when I was just an innocent kid. The series became very popular in Brazil for many decades.

The plot of “I dream of Jeannie” follows Captain Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman), an American astronaut who works at NASA. While on a desert island mission, he discovers a mysterious bottle. Opening it, he releases Jeannie (Barbara Eden), a beautiful female genie, who is overjoyed with her release, and she then promises to serve Captain Nelson. She is two thousand years old, from ancient Babylon. She has the power of materialising objects and the ability of controlling any situation with the blink of an eye. She falls in love with him at first sight.

Nelson is unsure what to do with Jeannie, especially given that his work is highly secret and his superiors tend to keep an eye on him. Often, the astronaut gets in trouble because of Jeannie’s behaviours.

Curiosity

  • Screen Gems Production and NBC channel created the sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” to compete with ABC’s series “Bewitched”, and right away there was a rivalry between the two magical shows;
  • The series was created, written and produced by Sidney Sheldon who became a famous suspense novel writer;
  • The TV show ran for 5 seasons. The first season had 30 episodes in black and white with the remaining 109 episodes in colour.
