Nominations for the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced yesterday. Because of the pandemic that has stopped a lot of series from being produced, the 2021 edition is not surprising and daring, but it’s still some juicy.
Father and daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones of “This Is Us” and Jasmine Cephas Jones of “Blindspotting” revealed the nominees. “The Mandalorian” and “The Crown” scored the most nominations per program with 24 each, followed by “WandaVision” with 23. Qualifying shows must have aired in the past year between 1 June 2020, and 31 May 2021.
I am glad to see Michaela Coel’s and her critically acclaimed “I May Destroy You” nominated for limited series and Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie categories. I missed her series not being nominated in any category in other TV awards this year such as Golden Globe. Her project is fantastic and deserves all praise and accolade. The BBC One/HBO drama which charts the fallout of a sexual assault will be up against “Mare of Easttown” (HBO), “The Queen’s Gambit” (Netflix), “Barry Jenkins’ Underground Railroad” (Amazon Prime) and “WandaVision” (Disney+).
It’s incredibly fabulous to see Mj Rodriguez be nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her outstanding performance as Blanca Rodriguez Evangelista in “Pose”. For the first time in the History of Emmy Awards, a transgender woman is nominated for the Lead Acting role. She makes history receiving this Emmy nomination.
Unfortunately, the British “Steve McQueen’s Small Axe” and Russell T Davies’s “It’s A Sin” series missed out in a tight Limited series category that only admits five nominations. They deserved to be on this list.
The official ceremony will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on 19 Sept. There will be a limited audience made up of the nominees and their guests. The ceremony will air on CBS and will be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+, according to Emmy event organization.
