Johnny is leaving his role as the villainous Grindelwald following a recent loss in court. He was revealed to be Grindelwald in the final moments of the first Fantastic Beasts film, before having a meaty role in The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Depp’s departure comes just days after he lost a highly-publicised defamation lawsuit against UK tabloid The Sun, over its reporting of his alleged abuse of ex-wife Amber Heard. The tabloid referred to him as a “wife-beater.” In the verdict, the judge called the newspaper’s reporting in the article at the centre of the lawsuit to be “substantially true.”
He posted on his Instagram that Warner Bros. had asked him to resign from his role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, while he is committed to continuing his legal battle with the actress Amber Heard, and he doesn’t admit any wrongdoing.
