The month of May has arrived full of big premieres for all movie and series maniacs. Series that I’m in love with are coming back to their final seasons like the adorable and outstanding LGBTQ+ drama “Pose” and the sweet and sensitive “Special”. Also, among Netflix TV shows this May, we will have the chance to watch the popular “Lucifer” season 5 part 2, the long-awaited third season of “Master of None”, the third and final season of “The Kominsky Method” and “Selena”. Also, I am expecting to see the debut of Ewan McGregor-led miniseries “Halston”, from executive producer Ryan Murphy, who is also the brilliant mind behind “Pose” and the new HBO Max title “Hacks”.

Pose
“Pose” is a fierce and fab revolutionary drama series for the LGBTQ + community, considering the main cast is composed of transgender actresses.
The story revolves around a scenario of LGBTQ + African-American and Latin American, in New York City setting with ballroom culture in the 1980s and, in the second season, in the early 1990s. The featured characters are dancers and models who compete for trophies and recognition in this underground culture and rely on a network of chosen families known as “Houses”.
Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Steven Canals, the series debuted on 3 June 2018, on FX. The series stars Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Billy Porter, Indya Moore, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Dyllón Burnside, Hailie Sahar, Angelica Ross, Angel Bismark Curiel, Sandra Bernhard e Charlayne Woodard.
The first season was critically acclaimed and subsequently received numerous nominations for the award, including the Golden Globe for “Best Drama Series” and the Golden Globe for “Best Actor in a Drama Series” for Billy Porter.
“Pose” series makes history by demystifying the lives of trans people, showing their struggles, their humanization and collaborating to reduce prejudice for them that have been lived on the margins of society.
The third and final season will premiere on 2 May 2021, on FX and later on Netflix.
Special
“Special” is a sweet comedy series based on the memoir “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves” (2015) created by Ryan O’Connell who also stars, writes, and executive produces the series. “Special” is “a distinctive and uplifting series about a gay man, Ryan, with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and finally go after the life he wants. He decides to leave his mother’s house and build his own path.
The series is very cute and makes us reflect everything is possible when we believe in ourselves. It’s hard not to fall in love with, laugh and cry with the situations experienced by the protagonist.
The second and final season will debut on 20 May 2021, on Netflix.
Lucifer
“Lucifer” is an urban fantasy television series developed by Tom Kapinos that premiered on Fox on January 25, 2016.
The series revolves around the story of Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the handsome Devil, who abandoned Hell for Los Angeles where he runs his nightclub named ‘LUX’ and becomes a consultant to the LAPD. Fox cancelled “Lucifer” after three seasons; a month later, Netflix picked up the series for the fourth season, which received high ratings and critical acclaim. Netflix renewed the series for the fifth season of 16 episodes. “Lucifer” season 5 was split in half following the coronavirus lockdown that put all of Hollywood on pause for most of 2020.
The first half was released in 2020, with the second half will premiere on 28 May 2021.
Master of None
“Master of None” is a comedy-drama television series, which was released in 2015, on Netflix. The series was created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, and stars Ansari in the lead role of Dev Shah, a 30-year-old actor, mostly following his romantic, professional, and personal experiences. The first season was set in New York City and consisted of ten episodes. The second season, which takes place in Italy and New York, consists of ten episodes and was released in 2017.
The series has received critical acclaim, appeared on multiple year-end top ten lists, and received multiple awards and nominations such as Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.
A third season will debut on Netflix, on 23 May 2021.
The Kominsky Method
“The Kominsky Method” is a comedy-drama series, created by Chuck Lorre, that premiered on Netflix, in 2018. The series stars Michael Douglas, Alan Arkin, Sarah Baker, Nancy Travis, and Kathleen Turner and follows an ageing acting coach who, years earlier, had a brief moment of success as an actor. In January 2019, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season, which premiered on 25 October 2019. In July 2020, the series was renewed for a third and final season.
This series is a great opportunity to see many renowned and experienced actors working very well together.
The third and final season will premiere on 28 May 2021, on the Netflix.
Selena: The Series
“Selena” is a biographical drama series that tells the story of the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, from her childhood to her rise to fame, along with the difficult and heartbreaking tough choices she and her family make to hold on to love and music.
The series was released on Netflix on 4 December 2020, and the second part of the series is set to premiere on 4 May 2021.
To be honest, I haven’t seen the series, just the hit 90s movie about her tragic history, which was good, and that’s why I’ve added this series to my list.
Halston
“Halston” is a new limited series produced by Netflix and created by Ryan Murphy (He doesn’t stop working) about the 1970s icon fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick. It will follow Halston’s rise to prominence as one of the most important designers of the 1970 and 1980s — and as a celebrity who embodied the decadence of the era. The story will then track the designer’s decline, delving into the “hostile takeover” of his namesake brand, which “forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset … the name Halston itself,” according to a Netflix synopsis.
The series stars Ewan McGregor, Rory Culkin, Rebecca Dayan, and Gian Franco Rodriguez.
It will release on 14 May 2021, on Netflix. I can’t wait to watch it!
Hacks
“Hacks” depicts the complex mentoring relationship that forms between Deborah Vance played by Jean Smart, a comedian who headlines shows in Las Vegas, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old (Hannah Einbinder). The series is going to dive into the intricacies of the dynamic between Smart’s character, who finds herself being continually phased out by younger and more relevant acts, and Einbender’s up-and-comer, who gets brought in to help Vance write better material. Of course, Smart’s comedic talents are on full display here, as they should be.
“Hacks” stars series Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder and Carl Clemons. The series is created and showrun by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky.
The series premiers on HBO Max, on 13 May 2021 with a two-episode release.
